When it was over, Ridgeway boys basketball coach Wes Henning made his way into the White Station locker room and congratulated each of the Spartans on a thrilling 71-70 Region 8-AAA semifinal victory over his Roadrunners on Tuesday at Central.

Andre Hollins is at the center of the celebration with teammates Rodriguez Tucker (left) and Mike Bowman after White Station defeated Ridgeway, 71-70, in a Region 8-AAA semifinal at Central on Tuesday.  "He and I have great respect for each other," said White Station coach Jesus Patino, whose defending Class AAA state-champion Spartans were taking on Ridgeway for the fourth time this season.  In a loser-goes-home semifinal pitting two programs that have produced a combined nine state-championship squads over the past decade, senior guard Joe Jackson's two free throws with 12.7 seconds left lifted White Station to Thursday's Region 8-AAA title game against Melrose, as well as Monday's sectional round.

Jackson, a 5-11 University of Memphis signee and McDonald's All-American, finished with 29 points, 12 of them coming in a fourth quarter that saw White Station rally from a 69-65 deficit with less than 35 seconds left.  Jackson's layup with 19.6 seconds left cut Ridgeway's advantage to 70-69. The Roadrunners then turned the ball over with 12.7 left when a deep inbounds pass deflected off the Central gymnasium rafters.

Jackson was then fouled as White Station attempted to inbound the ball still trailing by one. He calmly drained both free throws on a 1-and-1, giving the Spartans (24-7) the lead.  Ridgeway got the ball into the hands of sophomore guard Cameron Golden, who drove the baseline and attempted to find senior teammate Tarik Black in the paint.

But Golden's pass attempt was stolen by Spartans senior guard Julian Burton, who dribbled out the final few seconds for the victory. Black, a 6-8 University of Memphis signee, finished with 11 points (nine in the second half) after sitting out most of the first half with two fouls. Senior teammate Marterrace Brock's 21 points led Ridgeway (26-3), which had led by as many as seven points (55-48) early in the fourth quarter.

"I give them a lot of respect because they came out and spanked us in the regular season," said Jackson, whose 11-of-18 effort from the field included an electrifying one-handed jam over Black midway through the first quarter. "Playing against a team like this, they can end your whole high school career, and it's tough to come out here and get that win," he said. Junior post Nino Johnson countered Black's 11 with 12 points (six of them coming on dunks) and junior guard Andre Hollins added 13 for White Station, which had dropped two of three to Ridgeway this season.

Roadrunners Lose in City Championship 78-71

Turnovers, Missed Free Throws Costly SEE HIGHLIGHTS

Story by LC    Feb. 19, 2010

The Ridgeway Roadrunners fell 78-71 to White Station on tonight in the city championship game. The Roadrunners were leading comfortably 19-10 at the end of the 1st quarter. Sr. C Tarik Black was controlling the paint as he scored 8 of his game high 27 points. In the 2nd quarter the teams mostly traded baskets until the final 3 seconds when Ridgeway's So. G Cameron Golden fouled a desperation heave by one of the White Station players who was given 3 free throw attempts and made them all to trim Ridgeway's lead to 35-32 at halftime. It seemed Ridgeway would blow White Station out again for the 3rd time this season after the 1st quarter. Ridgeway made too many careless turnovers in the 2nd.

But it was the 3rd quarter that White Station took control of this contest. Ridgeway turned the ball over on 4 straight possesions and White Station took advantage of the miscues. U of M signee Joe Jackson took control, scoring 10 points in the 3rd quarter. Infact, the course of the game changed for good as White Station outscored Ridgeway by 13 points in the 3rd quarter to take a 56-46 lead by the end of the 3rd. Ridgeway was unable to contain White Station's backcourt who combined for 50 points in the game.

In the fourth, the Roadrunners fought hard to pull within 1 with 2:30 seconds to play at 66-65, but that was as close as they would get as Joe Johnson took control of the game, scoring 8 of his 23 points down the stretch to secure the win for the Spartans. Ridgeway was led in scoring by Tarik Black with 27, Golden added 11, Brock 10, Berwer 9, Pearson 6, and Marshall with 5. The Roadrunners fall to 22-2 as they prepare to play in the state tournament.

The Roadrunners will surely need to get refocused as they have dropped 2 of it's last three ballgames. SEE COMMERCIAL APPEAL

Ridgeway vs Craigmont (Play-In)

Roadrunners Advance To City Title Game

(1) Ridgeway 74, (4) Craigmont 59

From The Commercial Appeal    Feb 14, 2010

Having just earned a berth in Thursday's MIAA Class AAA city-title game with a 74-59 play-in game victory over host Craigmont, Ridgeway figured to be jubilant afterward in the visitors' locker room. Instead, the Roadrunners had their heads in their hands Saturday and sported long faces as their head coach, Wes Henning, delivered a fiery postgame speech.

"If you ask me if we're playing OK, I'd say, 'Yes,'" Henning told his players. "But I've never seen a team playing OK win a gold ball." Though his Roadrunners (22-1 and ranked No. 1 in The Dandy Dozen) had won going away, Henning was less than pleased with Ridgeway's 21 turnovers and its inability to put No. 4-ranked Craigmont (22-4) away early. After building a 17-8 lead after a quarter, Ridgeway allowed the Chiefs to hang around despite forcing 28 turnovers and limiting Craigmont to 35 percent shooting in the first half.

Ridgeway, which got a team-high 17 points from senior reserve Corieon Pearson and 16 from senior guard Kristopher Brewer, was coming off a 78-63 road loss to Germantown on Friday, the Roadrunners' first loss this season. "We've got to step up our defense and our team unity isn't together," Brewer said. "It's a lack of focus and stuff like that." Senior forward Tarik Black, a 6-8 University of Memphis signee who finished with 12 points, called for a team meeting before the Roadrunners' 6 p.m. practice Sunday. "We've got some things we need to fix," Black said.

Craigmont, which trailed by as many as 19 points, cut the gap to 66-55 with 1:25 left on a layup by senior point guard Terrance Durham. But Ridgeway, which had gone 9-of-27 from the free-throw line in its loss to Germantown on Friday, connected on 6 of 8 over the final minute to hold off the Chiefs. "We kind of came unraveled a little bit there. You can't take anything from Ridgeway. They bounced back pretty good," said Craigmont coach David Taylor, whose Chiefs were also coming off a loss, having dropped a 61-58 decision to Cordova.

"We wanted to accomplish something we haven't accomplished here at Craigmont. Unfortunately it didn't happen, but I think we've got good representation (with Ridgeway)." The Roadrunners will take on White Station on Thursday in the Class AAA boys city-title game."I'm not satisfied with how we're playing because we're just playing OK," Henning said. "We've got kids that can get the job done. We've just got to stop settling."

Free Throw Shooting Keys Victory

Feb 12, 2010    From The Commercial Appeal

The lost art of the free throw helped eighth-ranked Germantown’s Red Devils save an opportunity for the kind of win that has eluded them all season — a 78-63 Senior Night rout of No. 1 and previously unbeaten Ridgeway Friday night.

Senior Jordan Hulsey outplayed University of Memphis senior Tarik Black in the first half with 14 of his 19 points as Germantown flashed to a 37-21 lead. But it was free throws that got the Red Devils through some shaky stretch moments. They hit 28-of-36 from the line, including an incredible 22-of-24 in the final eight minutes.

Todd Mayo, frustrated through three quarters, was 10-of-12 from the line when it counted and had 14 of his 19 points in the final period for Germantown (23-6, 11-3). Andre Hollins added 14 points, including 6-of-6 free throws in the fourth while senior Chris Pollard was also 6-of-6, and wound up with nine points. All are seniors who made their final regular-season home game a memorable one.

“We worked on free throws the final 30 minutes of practice all week, and when one of the guys missed a one-and-one, he did extra conditioning work. On his own, not because the coach told him,” Germantown coach Newton Mealer said. “I put two things on the board tonight. First that it was senior night and we needed to play with emotion. But I also said that we needed a signature win, and we didn’t want to wait until the district tournament to have to get it. Beating the No. 1 team in the state gives us immediate respect.”

Germantown fans were ready for The Roadrunners, even the Red Devil was fired up.   photo by LC

Ridgeway (21-1, 13-1) could not get any consistent outside shooting, allowing Germantown to collapse its man defense and frustrate Black. It was even worse at the free throw line, as the Roadrunners went 9-of-27, including a stretch of 11 straight misses in the middle quarters.“When it counts, you have to make big shots, and you have to make free throws,” Ridgeway coach Wes Henning said. “We did neither. But this might be a blessing. It’s tough to take that goose egg in the loss column into the post-season.”

Germantown had a 12-1 lead before Ridgeway could catch its first breath, then systematically shredded the Roadrunner defense as its backcourt consistently drew defenders up, then passed off the wings to Hulsey or other cutters. The energy was coming from senior Jeff Johnson, who had four of his six assists and two blocks in the quarter.

Hulsey, who is getting some looks from mid-major Division 1 schools and D-3 schools looking at his strong ACT score, also came up with 14 rebounds against University of Memphis signee Black – his fourth double-double in the last five games.“I was trying to stay behind him and not let him get anything easy, and my teammates were giving me a lot of help on the weak side,” Hulsey said.

The third quarter was a struggle as Ridgeway turned on the press, and forced several turnovers. But the Roadrunners could get no closer than 11 points – thanks largely to their 0-for-7 effort at the line.Germantown got to the double bonus a minute into the fourth quarter, and made the most of it. “I was pretty tired most of the night, but the fourth quarter I was able to get it together,” said Mayo, who admitted that each trip to the foul line was also a chance to grab a breath. “The thing about Todd is when the game is on the line, you’re either going to foul him, or he’s driving past you,” Mealer said.

Black, held to one point in the first period, had eight of his team-high 18 points in the final quarter to lead Ridgeway, which plays at District 14-AAA champ Craigmont tonight for a berth in the MIAA Championship game next week. Kristopher Brewer added 14 points while Martarrence Brock added 11, eight after the break.

On this blistering cold night with temps in the teens outside, the Roadrunners heated up on the Wooddale Cardinals in the fourth quarter to pull out a 74-64 victory. The Roadrunners never trailed in the game, but was never able to really pull away from the scrappy Cardinals who fought hard til the end. But it was the Ridgeway seniors who went to work in this game. Ridgeway led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter behind 7 points from Sr. forward Marterrance Brock, who ended with 20 in the game.

Wooddale kept it close throughout the second quarter. Sr. center Tatik Black scored 8 of his game high 24 pts in the quarter. Black also recorded double figures in rebounds, controlling the paint. The Roadrunners also welcomed the return of Sr. guard Corieon Pearson back to action. It was good to see Pearson who has missed several games due to an eye injury back on the court. Pearson scored 6 points in the contest. The Roadrunners led 39-32 at half time. By the end of the 3rd quarter the game had tighten to 46-50.

But in the 4th Tarik Black scored 10 points and Marterrance Brock connected on 5-6 free throws down the stretch to ice the game. Ridgeway's suffocating defense held Wooddale scoreless in the last 2:00 mins. of the game. Said Roadrunner Coach Wes Henning "we were a little sluggish tonight because the kids didn't know whether we would play or not with the snow and everything. Plus I give Wooddale credit for playing very hard. It was a good win for us tonight as our guys was scrappy and played hard".

The Roadrunners are ranked #1 in the state by the Associated Press. Kris Brewer chipped in with 13 points, Brandon Lewis had 3 points, Daryl Marshall 3 and Cameron Golden 3 to round out the scoring. Several scouts were in attendance. I spoke with Tennessee State University head coach John Cooper who indicated that he was there to pursue Sr. forward Marterrance Brock. Said Cooper "Brock is good. I see him as an excellent wingman for TSU". The Roadrunners face Germantown Friday at their gym. Go Roadrunners!

Roadrunners Display Determination, Grit and Toughness in Emotional Win

No doubt this was the toughest win of the year. Southwind fought til the end, but Ridgeway made the biggest plays to win.The Ridgeway Roadrunners improved to 20-0 last night with a gritty, tough and emotional win over a game Southwind tonight 74-73 in front of a capacity crowd of better than 2,000 at Southwind. The Roadrunners overcame a slow start and star center Tarik Black's 1st half foul trouble. Southwind led  15-12 at the end of the 1st quarter. The game was an intense competition of athletic moves throughout the first half. It appeared that Southwind gained momentum after a technical foul was called on Sr. forward K. Brewer, somehow giving Southwind three FTs and possesion of the ball. Sr. F Marerrious Brock scored 7 points in the 2nd to steady the offense. Southwind led at halftime 35-31.

But the 3rd quarter was when Ridgeway made it's move. So. G Cameron Golden erupted for 9 points in the quarter. The Roadrunners defense began clamping down on free shooters and they forced 8 turnovers in the 3rd. Ridgeway led after three quarters 51-43. The Roadrunners got additional contributions from reserves such as Demetrius Lampkin 5 pts.

In the 4th quarter 6'8 Sr. centerTarik Black showed why he is the Memphis area's top big man as he dominated the rest of this game with his inside presence, snatching 11 rebounds in the quarter and scoring 13 points in the paint. He hit on 3 of 3 free throws and had 2 amazing blocks. Black finished with 14 points and 16 rebounds. The Roadrunners were led in scoring by So. G Cameron Golden's 21 points. Brock had 16 and Brewer had 7. Brock made clutch free throws down the stretch.

It was an emotional win for the #1 ranked Roadrunner's. The players were very jubilent in the locker room following the contest. As Coach Henning entered the dressing room the players all hugged him and told him how much they loved him. Coach Henning said "I'm so proud of this team. The way they hung in there, stuck together and played through adversity. I love you guys. You showed why you are champions tonight. I didn't want to tell the players I had a death in the family. I wanted them to keep their focus on this game".

Then they prayed. It was awesome. SEE MORE PHOTOS  Read Commercail Appeal Article

Ridgeway vs Overton 2010

Black Lead Roadrunners to Victory, Improves to 19-0

From the Commercial Appeal

Tarik Black dominated inside like he’s supposed to with 25 points and the usual bushel of rebounds and altered shots. Ridgeway rolled to a second 20-point win over a mortal foe, like it’s supposed to do, dispatching Overton by a 69-49 count on the homecourt Wednesday night. Still, the Roadrunners (19-0, 10-0 in District 15-AAA and ranked No. 1 in the Dandy Dozen) weren’t hitting on all cylinders, especially in the first half, committing nine turnovers on their way to a 20-turnover night.

“I was reacting instead of trying to slow things to a better tempo inside,” said Black, guilty of four of the miscues as the Wolverines stayed within range until two late baskets by senior Kristopher Brewer opened the lead to 38-27 at the break.Black was coming off a 22-point effort in an 88-68 win at Collierville Tuesday.

“He’s a man among boys in there,” Overton coach John Anderson said of the University of Memphis signee. “Not too many nights at this level will he run into someone who looks like him. The next level it will happen, but here he dominates.”After what Black described as a mini-accountability session at halftime, Ridgeway opened the third period with a 13-4 run – six of the points by Black and four by Brewer, making it a 20-point game and a settled issue.

“We locked it down on defense like we needed to do,” said Brewer, who added 12 points to the win, while athletic sophomore Cameron Golden chipped in 13. “We needed to start hitting the boards and backing Tarik up more,” said Golden, who had three of his baskets on athletic tap-ins.

Ridgeway coach Wes Henning said the biggest problem with tempo has been the loss of senior guard Marterrance Brock, who has missed the last two weeks with a respiratory infection.“He goes back to the doctor tomorrow, and I’m hoping he gets cleared. The second quarter was all about not having him handling the ball,” said Henning, who added “it shows up more because Overton is such a scrappy team. They’re always coming after you.”

Black Leads Roadrunners to VictoryHenning is certainly hoping to have Brock in the lineup as his team prepares for road games the next two Friday nights with their closest district rivals, Southwind and Germantown.

Henning said his team will likely play a play-in game for the city championship at Craigmont, with a trip to White Station before district play opens. But Henning, who is looking for his fifth state title in 10 years, told his team “You win championships on the road.”Overton, after a solid start, is now 15-7 and 5-6 after back-to-back losses to Southwind and Ridgeway.

LaDarius Davis, a 6-5 junior, had 14 points before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter while trying to handle the 6-8 Black. LaDarrius Brown, a 6-4 senior, added 13 to the win.But the Wolverines were lost trying to go inside on Black and 6-5 sophomore Brandon Lewis, and were spotty at best from the outside.

“We needed to settle down and work for better shots outside,” said Anderson, the Wolverines’ first-year coach, who has helped a 4-21 squad bounce back to the middle of the district pack. “Hopefully we get a couple of days rest and get ourselves refocused.”

Top ranked Ridgeway improved to 16-0 with an easy 84-49 victory over Houston in what can truly be described as a team effort on Homecoming night. Coach Henning flipped the script and started mostly reserves, allowing them to play the entire first half of the contest. The Roadrunners were also without star Sr. F Marterrace Brock who sat out the contest from what he described to me as "fatigue" and "precautionary coronary concerns". Ridgeway controlled the contest from start to finish with the outcome never really in doubt. Every member of the team that dressed scored and played significant minutes.

Ridgeway led 30-25 at halftime and that's when Coach henning put the starters in the game to start the 2nd half and of course the rout was on hand. One of the highlights of this game was So. G Cameron Golden's thunderous dunk and he stole a pass and streaked to the hoop. That play brought the crowd and bench off their feet. Sr. G Darryl Marshall connected on three 3 pt FGs in the game. The Roadrunners are back in action Tuesday at Kirby. Highlights coming soon.

Ridgeway vs Germantown 2010

Roadrunners Top Germantown 91-79, Remains Undefeated 14-0

From The Commercial Appeal

Ridgeway coach Wes Henning was able to take a short sigh of relief after Tuesday night's pivotal 91-79 District 15-AAA win over Germantown. It was a win that kept the Roadrunners perfect at 14-0 overall and 7-0 in district play. But Henning knows his team must now buckle down and prepare to face those same seven district teams one more time. ''That's the first round,'' Henning said.

''We've got to come back and do it all over again. We've got to humble ourselves and come in and next time play just as hard as we played this round and get better for postseason.'' Ridgeway led the Red Devils (17-5, 5-2 District 15-AAA) from start to finish, taking a 24-11 lead after the first quarter and a 41-32 cushion into halftime. But after falling behind by 12 late in the third quarter, Germantown used a 7-2 run led by seniors Todd Mayo and Austin Hollins to end the period, pulling to within 62-56.

''They've got two good players in Mayo and Hollins,'' Henning said. ''They're going to make runs like that. You're never really out of the forest when you've got kids that can play that well. They've got a good squad.'' But senior Marterrace Brock got his game going just in time, scoring 11 of his 22 points in the final quarter to keep his team unbeaten. Ridgeway also got 27 from sophomore Cameron Golden and 19 from University of Memphis signee Tarik Black.

The Red Devils were led by Mayo's 29 before he fouled out with 2:38 remaining. Hollins added 20 before he, too, fouled out with 2:01 to play. For Germantown, it was its second loss in as many night's after Monday's 85-61 loss to Melrose at FedExForum. Ridgeway jumps back into district play Friday when it hosts Houston in its homecoming game.

Roadrunners Defeat Collierville 73-44, Improves to 13-0

Starters Rest Most of the Night

Jan. 13, 2010 by LC

Ridgeway dominated Collierville in an easy victory. The Roadrunners led 22-7 after the first quarter and never looked back. Most of the starters rested the majority of the contest. The score was 32 -7 midway through the 2nd quarter. University of Memphis signee Tarik Black scored 11 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in his brief time on the floor to set the tone in this game where it seemed every player on the team scored. Ridgway takes on Wooddale next.

Corieon Pearson Hopeful of Return Soon

 Sr. G Corieon Pearson

Jan. 13, 2010 by LC

Corieon Pearson, the Sr 6'1 combo guard that has been very instrumental to the good start the team has enjoyed is hopeful of returning to active playing status real soon. Pearson has been out since the White Station game with an eye injury. He told me that he is to see the Doctor this week and is hopeful of getting medical clearance to resume playing. His leadership, scoring and all around floor game will be a welcome addition back to the team. We wish Pearson a speedy recovery.

RIDGEWAY RALLIES PAST SOUTHWIND 76-68, record now 12-0 (4-0)

Jan 12, 2010 from The Commercial Appeal

Tarik Black's inside game and any semblance of a three-point shooting game by Ridgeway were missing in action Tuesday night at Ridgeway -- until it counted.

Black, who struggled for much of the first three quarters, rallied for 14 second-half points, eight in the final quarter. And sophomore Cameron Golden scored nine of his 19 points, including crucial back-to-back treys midway through the final period as the host Roadrunners rallied from a 10-point deficit for a 76-68 win over Southwind in a District 15-AAA showdown."They had us running, but we got tougher with our defense and that got things started," said Golden of the Roadrunners (12-0, 4-0 and ranked No. 4 in The Commercial Appeal Dandy Dozen), who outscored Southwind (14-2, 3-1, No. 3) by 24-7 the final eight minutes.

Golden's treys forced a tie at 63 with 4:55 left in the game. "I had finally hit some mid-range shots, and I was able to step back."Darrian Gray, who led Southwind with 24 points, answered with a three of his own to briefly put the Jaguars back on top. But that was the only three in the quarter for a Southwind team that had lit Ridgeway up eight times behind the arc in the first three periods.

Black, who spent much of the first half on the bench with two fouls, and didn't get his first points until midway through the third quarter, took a feed from Darryl Marshall for a layup that made it 70-68 with 35 seconds to go. Marterrence Brock hit two free throws, then had a steal and an assist to Marshall to make it 74-68. Black, a U of M signee, ended the game with a slam."We saw the scoreboard and knew we had to get it together," Black said. "I got those fouls and that played with me. But I don't think my head was right at the start. I think I was waiting too long for this game."

Ridgeway coach Wes Henning said, "Our defense set up some things for us. But we had to tell Tarik to keep it simple and get down low. Southwind (minus injured 6-8 freshman Jonathan Williams) really didn't have an answer if we isolated him down low."Kristopher Brewer had 14 points, seven in the first quarter to keep Ridgeway in the game early. Marshall added 11 while Brock scored nine and backup center Brandon Lewis eight, six in the second quarter while spelling Black.

"We didn't take care of the ball at the end, and didn't close 'em out," Southwind coach Paul Edwards said. "They did a good job of stretching out their defense and getting us out of the things we like to do. But we didn't close it."Gray had 15 of his points in the first half. Nick Mason had 15 points, including one of four threes in the third quarter that helped the Jags take a 56-46 lead with just over two minutes left in the third quarter. Darious Paige added 10.

Ridgeway vs White Station 2010

NO CONTEST

(4) RIDGEWAY 89, (2) WHITE STATION 52

When they last met, White Station boys basketball coach Jesus Patino said his Spartans lost their sense of pride in a sobering 18-point road loss last month against rival Ridgeway. On Saturday, before a packed home crowd of more than 3,500 people, defending Class AAA state-champion White Station again looked like a team in search of its identity, falling, 89-52, to a much more physical Roadrunners bunch in embarrassing fashion at Spartan Palace. Senior guard Marterrace Brock's 20 points led the red hot Roadrunners (11-0 and ranked No. 4 in The Dandy Dozen), who invoked the running-clock mercy rule late in the fourth quarter in beating the No. 2-ranked Spartans for the second time this season.

"We gotta play them like we expect them to play us. We expected them to come out and try to kill us," said Ridgeway senior forward Tarik Black, a 6-8 University of Memphis signee who finished with 15 points. "It's an important game. Joe Jackson vs. Tarik Black. Ridgeway vs. White Station. It's big to us." Senior guard Kristopher Brewer added 18 and sophomore guard Cameron Golden had 15 for Ridgeway, which used a 12-0 scoring run over the first 4:09 of the third quarter to turn a 42-30 contest at halftime into a rout.

Jackson, a 5-foot-11 Memphis signee, finished with 25 points for a White Station (9-3) squad that was without its head coach, who missed the game because of family reasons. Coming into the game, Jackson needed 30 points to move ahead of former Ridgeway star Orien Watson into 10th place on Shelby County's all-time boys prep basketball scoring list.

"I think our team was focused for this game and the first game (against White Station on Dec. 18). I know their team had a lot going on with coach Patino not being here," Ridgeway coach Wes Henning said. "I could tell at the start of the game that his team's focus was not where it would have been had he been here."

After seeing its first-quarter lead cut to 17-14 on a Jackson basket with 2:56 left in the first, Ridgeway outscored the Spartans, 11-3, over the final 2:45 of the first quarter to lead 28-17 after one. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Golden helped ignite the spurt. Golden then scored the first five points of the second quarter to give Ridgeway a 33-17 advantage. Jackson was the lone White Station player to finish in double figures. Junior guard Andre Hollins added seven points and junior post Nino Johnson had six.

(10) Ridgeway 111, (1) White Station 93

Ridgeway High boys basketball coach Wes Henning's pregame speech to his team hadn't touched on beating defending Class AAA state champion White Station. Instead, Henning simply demanded a maximum effort from his Roadrunners against the nationally ranked Spartans before a sellout crowd Friday at Ridgeway. "We just talked about doing their best," said Henning, obviously elated following Ridgeway's 111-93 shootout victory over the visiting Spartans.

Senior guard Marterrace Brock's 31 points led five Roadrunners in double figures Friday as Ridgeway built a 19-point first-quarter lead and never took its foot off the gas. Fellow senior guard Kristopher Brewer had 26 points and sophomore guard Cameron Golden pumped in 20 on a sizzling 8-of-11 shooting performance to help offset a game-high 45 points from University of Memphis signee Joe Jackson.

After falling behind by a bucket in the first quarter, Ridgeway (6-0 and ranked No. 10 in The Dandy Dozen) went on to outscore White Station 32-13 in a fast-paced first period in which the Roadrunners connected on 14 of 19 shots (73.7 percent). Ridgeway senior forward and Memphis signee Tarik Black's two-handed jam at the 4:49 mark of the first quarter ignited a 20-2 Ridgeway run. Roadrunners senior guard Corieon Pearson scored seven of his 15 points during the spurt, then gave Ridgeway a 19-point first quarter lead with his jumper from the right elbow with two seconds left in the period.

White Station (6-1 and ranked No. 1 in The Dandy Dozen), coming off a 75-72 district road victory over East on Thursday night, managed to slice Ridgeway's advantage to 49-42 by halftime. But the Spartans never got closer than seven points the rest of the way, though Jackson scored 16 of his 45 in the third quarter to keep his team within striking distance.

Ridgeway finished 41-of-69 (59.4 percent) from the field overall to White Station's 33-of-63 (52.4 percent)."We lost our sense of pride," White Station coach Jesus Patino said. "What makes us special is we're a bunch of fighters and grinders, and when we get pushed, we push back. We never pushed back (Friday). "We lost our identity, and it was coming (Thursday) night in the East game, too. We just decided we were too good to do anything and got to fooling around and got the big head. That's the great thing about this game -- it humbles you quick."

Junior post Nino Johnson scored 16 points for the Spartans. Senior guard Harry Green added 11 and junior guard Andre Hollins had 10.It wasn't nearly enough against a Ridgeway squad that also got 13 points from Black."We just wanted to come out and play as hard as we could and go from there," said Brock, whose Roadrunners travel to White Station on Jan. 9 for the rematch. "We've just got to take it one game at a time."

SWEET SHOOTING GOLDEN,  KEY PLAYER

  So. G Cameron Golden

Story by LC    Dec 20, 2009

Cameron Golden has one sweet left handed stroke. The 6'0 sophomore guard has been lighting it up this season for the Roadrunners varsity hoops team. It's a credit to this young man that he is the starting shooting guard on a team with many versatile athletes. Golden was a member of the JV and varsity team last year. He has scored in double figures each of the Roadrunners first 6 games. Golden is most deadly from 3pt territory, but is equally good taking his man off the dribble. Ridgeway knocked off #1 ranked White Station and Golden was a major factor, connecting on several 3 pt FGs. Golden hit 8-11 shots against White Station. Look for this young Roadrunner to get even better as the season goes along.

TEAMS OF THE DECADE

State titles: White Station (5), 2000, 02, 03, 04, 09; Ridgeway (4), 2000, 02, 05, 08

Region titles: White Station (5), 2000, 03, 04, 07, 09; Ridgeway (4), 2000, 02, 05, 08

Overall record for the decade: White Station 311-64 (82.9%); Ridgeway 294-67 (81.4%)

Head-to-head this decade: White Station leads, 13-10.

They are no longer District 15-AAA rivals. The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association took care of that last November with its 2009-13 reclassification plan, which sent White Station to District 16-AAA and kept Ridgeway in 15-AAA. But White Station boys basketball coach Jesus Patino and Ridgeway coach Wes Henning both thought it wise to continue a rivalry that's produced a remarkable nine state-championship squads over the past decade.

The two Class AAA basketball powers meet for the final time this decade tonight at 7:30 at Ridgeway. White Station will host the rematch Jan. 9. "You've still got to go through them in the regional tournament," Patino said. "Plus, you've got to remember, revenuewise, it's probably the best game in town. We need the revenue, and that's why Henning and I decided to do this home-and-home. We knew it would be stupid for us not to play each other all the time. As long as (Henning) wants it, we'll continue to do it." The Spartans have won five Class AAA state titles since 2000, while Ridgeway has won a pair of Class AA titles and two Class AAA state titles over that span.Brentwood Academy is the only other Tennessee school to have won as many as four boys basketball state titles this decade.

"There's probably no other two rivals in the state that have that many state titles between them," said Henning, one of three Memphis-area boys basketball coaches to have won four or more state titles at the same school. "We feel like it's the best (rivalry) in the state, and if not, it's definitely one of the best. We're planning on keeping it going. It's a good series. I love playing his teams. You always know you're going to play a quality team, because coach Patino is going to produce that."

As is usually the case, expect a sell-out as well, Henning said. The defending Class AAA state-champion Spartans (6-0 and ranked No. 1 in The Dandy Dozen) are led this season by University of Memphis signee Joe Jackson's 36.8 points per game.No. 10-ranked Ridgeway (5-0) boasts a Memphis signee as well in 6-7 post Tarik Black."It's good for our community. All the games, you know, are sold out," Henning said. "Our community expects us to play one another."

Story by LC    Dec 15, 2009

The Roadrunners came out fast and strong and grabbed command of this game in the first minutes of the contest. So. guard Cameron Golden connected on two early 3's and Ridgeway's suffocating press forced Kirby into mistake after mistake that the Roadrunners took advantage of to establish a 30-13 1st qtr lead.
