The lost art of the free throw helped eighth-ranked Germantown’s Red Devils save an opportunity for the kind of win that has eluded them all season — a 78-63 Senior Night rout of No. 1 and previously unbeaten Ridgeway Friday night.
Senior Jordan Hulsey outplayed University of Memphis senior Tarik Black in the first half with 14 of his 19 points as Germantown flashed to a 37-21 lead. But it was free throws that got the Red Devils through some shaky stretch moments. They hit 28-of-36 from the line, including an incredible 22-of-24 in the final eight minutes.
Todd Mayo, frustrated through three quarters, was 10-of-12 from the line when it counted and had 14 of his 19 points in the final period for Germantown (23-6, 11-3). Andre Hollins added 14 points, including 6-of-6 free throws in the fourth while senior Chris Pollard was also 6-of-6, and wound up with nine points. All are seniors who made their final regular-season home game a memorable one.
“We worked on free throws the final 30 minutes of practice all week, and when one of the guys missed a one-and-one, he did extra conditioning work. On his own, not because the coach told him,” Germantown coach Newton Mealer said. “I put two things on the board tonight. First that it was senior night and we needed to play with emotion. But I also said that we needed a signature win, and we didn’t want to wait until the district tournament to have to get it. Beating the No. 1 team in the state gives us immediate respect.”

Ridgeway (21-1, 13-1) could not get any consistent outside shooting, allowing Germantown to collapse its man defense and frustrate Black. It was even worse at the free throw line, as the Roadrunners went 9-of-27, including a stretch of 11 straight misses in the middle quarters.“When it counts, you have to make big shots, and you have to make free throws,” Ridgeway coach Wes Henning said. “We did neither. But this might be a blessing. It’s tough to take that goose egg in the loss column into the post-season.”
Germantown had a 12-1 lead before Ridgeway could catch its first breath, then systematically shredded the Roadrunner defense as its backcourt consistently drew defenders up, then passed off the wings to Hulsey or other cutters. The energy was coming from senior Jeff Johnson, who had four of his six assists and two blocks in the quarter.
Hulsey, who is getting some looks from mid-major Division 1 schools and D-3 schools looking at his strong ACT score, also came up with 14 rebounds against University of Memphis signee Black – his fourth double-double in the last five games.“I was trying to stay behind him and not let him get anything easy, and my teammates were giving me a lot of help on the weak side,” Hulsey said.
The third quarter was a struggle as Ridgeway turned on the press, and forced several turnovers. But the Roadrunners could get no closer than 11 points – thanks largely to their 0-for-7 effort at the line.Germantown got to the double bonus a minute into the fourth quarter, and made the most of it. “I was pretty tired most of the night, but the fourth quarter I was able to get it together,” said Mayo, who admitted that each trip to the foul line was also a chance to grab a breath. “The thing about Todd is when the game is on the line, you’re either going to foul him, or he’s driving past you,” Mealer said.
Black, held to one point in the first period, had eight of his team-high 18 points in the final quarter to lead Ridgeway, which plays at District 14-AAA champ Craigmont tonight for a berth in the MIAA Championship game next week. Kristopher Brewer added 14 points while Martarrence Brock added 11, eight after the break.
